When Stephanie starts to try and un earth the truth to Alison’s disappearance it becomes clear that someone doesn’t want her looking too closely at the past。 Stephanie investigations are having repercussions and by looking into the past she is putting her life at risk。Well written, great characters and lots of suspense make this an entertaining read。I would like to thank both Net Galley and Inkubator Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

EnjoyableEven though I had the general idea of who the guilty parties were I stuck with it。 So there wasn't a huge surprise ending。 Just wished that the main character was a little less of a 1950's kind of women。 Believing her husband could do no wrong and would walk on water before he would betray her。 EnjoyableEven though I had the general idea of who the guilty parties were I stuck with it。 So there wasn't a huge surprise ending。 Just wished that the main character was a little less of a 1950's kind of women。 Believing her husband could do no wrong and would walk on water before he would betray her。 。。。more

The main character in this book Steph (Stephanie) starts off as a student studying art history and lives with her flatmate Alison in a flat in London。 They are studying the same degree, but are only in some of the same classes。 Steph gets some very restless nights, especially when Alison has her boyfriend of about a year, coming over to stay the night。 Let’s just say, they are pretty noisy! Steph lost her father after he was killed in an accident at work。 When she was only seventeen, she and her steady boyfriend were in a bad car accident, for which he blames her for distracting him and not the drunken driver who crossed lanes。 He was left severely injured and Steph had numerous surgeries on her leg which left her in severe pain, even years later。 One night, Alison is packing for what she says is a weekend away with Josh, but she arrives home early and starts acting differently。 One day she texts Steph, saying she needs to speak to her, but Steph has just been asked out by her crush, Rahul, and she figures she will speak to her later in their flat。 Unfortunately, this was the last time she ever heard from her!Years later, she is happily married to college professor Oliver and has two young children who she adores。 They live in a nice, but somewhat small house, as they make do with just Oliver’s wages as she stays home to look after the children。 Steph had always wanted to change over and study law, but her husband doesn’t want her to study, never mind work! It has been some nine years since Alison disappeared and her boyfriend Josh was convicted of her murder, without her body ever being found。 Steph had taken it badly and had horrendous nightmares about her disappearance and likely murder, repeatedly for months afterwards and had to see a doctor for help。 She got together with Oliver and was ready to have her first baby when Josh’s trial happened, so never attended。 She has always had a hole in her life where Alison used to be, her first true friend at college and she has never forgiven herself completely for not arranging to meet her when she asked。 She must have had something important to discuss, but Steph never got to find out。 Now, a TV researcher has contacted her, saying he is looking into Alison’s disappearance and wishes to speak with her, as well as her husband and Alison’s other contacts。 Oliver flat out refuses, not wanting Steph to start having those nightmares again! David Green is persistent however and won’t stop till they meet。 All these questions and her husband’s point blank refusal to engage with the investigation, starts to raise questions about her past and what really happened to Alison。 Josh has always insisted he is innocent of her murder and could never have killed the woman he loved so deeply。 Steph has always trusted her husband and his working late and trips away with William, his best friend and an auction house owner, to buy various works of art or signet rings, which he has a large collection of。 But she has always wondered how close he might be to some of the other female students and women he is always around。 She starts wondering about everything and her husband doesn’t help when he refuses to explain things and concentrates on the effect all these memories are having on her health and sleep。 Her supposedly perfect life starts to fall apart, the more the past is bringing up some unexpected findings。 When someone starts to address some threatening letters and more to her at home, she has to watch over her shoulder all the time, but has no idea who is actually after her。 If someone wants her to stop speaking to this researcher, then what has been hidden about Alison’s disappearance and murder? Now she is in danger and she doesn’t know who the real killer might be。 Some surprises along the way and the opening chapter threw me a little with the POV it was written from, that seemed to follow straight into the main character’s POV! It gets a lot more intense as the storyline continues and leaves you with lots of questions as Steph’s own knowledge of her husband begins to waver, knowing she has maybe been a little bit too innocent and trusting of him and others。 An interesting tale by the end and I didn’t quite see it coming! I look forward to reading more by this author in the future。 I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above。 。。。more

I trust author Miranda Rijks, and she has never let me down in delivering a suspenseful thriller。 Her books, for me, are what I would call an easy, somewhat predictable, read, but the writing has the power to force me to read it at one go。This book too had the haunting quality to keep me quite involved in the plotline which had Steph wanting to know what happened to her roommate who had disappeared years ago。Now safely ensconced in a loving family life, I liked how the sense of justice slowly aw I trust author Miranda Rijks, and she has never let me down in delivering a suspenseful thriller。 Her books, for me, are what I would call an easy, somewhat predictable, read, but the writing has the power to force me to read it at one go。This book too had the haunting quality to keep me quite involved in the plotline which had Steph wanting to know what happened to her roommate who had disappeared years ago。Now safely ensconced in a loving family life, I liked how the sense of justice slowly awakened in the main character when she was approached by a crime series journalist, asking questions about her then-best friend。Past and present were slowly laid open, with only a few characters at play, it was easy to guess what could have happened。 All the same, it was fun to read the prose that soon culminated in an explosive reveal。A letter from the author at the end showed me her inspiration for the book and made me glad that fiction had started out from the truths in her life。 A fun read。 I trust Miranda Rijks to give me a solid two hour escapist read。 。。。more

This had all the suspense and intrigue you would expect from a Miranda Rijks book, but I’m afraid this wasn’t my favourite of her endings。I’m usually shocked and blown away by the big reveal at the end。 The writing is always cleverly manipulated to take you by surprise but still be completely in keeping with the story you have read。 The whole way through this book, I was trying to guess an outside of the box theory of what could have happened to Alison。 However, the conclusion that was presented This had all the suspense and intrigue you would expect from a Miranda Rijks book, but I’m afraid this wasn’t my favourite of her endings。I’m usually shocked and blown away by the big reveal at the end。 The writing is always cleverly manipulated to take you by surprise but still be completely in keeping with the story you have read。 The whole way through this book, I was trying to guess an outside of the box theory of what could have happened to Alison。 However, the conclusion that was presented to me just felt a little flat and uninspiring。 It was entirely out of left-field, and I was a little disappointed when it was all revealed。 A lot of it just didn’t make sense either, especially the notes Steph was getting。 Yes, we find out who sent them, but the content had no relevance whatsoever。 I was expecting there to be a big twist involving this vein of the story, but it wasn’t there。 The last two chapters are dedicated to the aftermath, one set a little while after and another a year later。 Throughout these, I was waiting for the big shocker to come, but it didn’t。 It was more Steph coming to terms with what had happened and her fighting her conscience to put things right for other people。 It felt a little too twee for my liking。 It had too much of a ‘happy ever after’ for a Psych Thriller。 The book had kept me gripped throughout; however, it was just the ending that let me down。 Maybe my expectations of Rijks’ books have become too high, or perhaps this one just wasn’t quite right for me。 I am still looking forward to future works by this author, and I’m hoping this was just a minor blip。 Still, a solid three-star read for keeping the fast-paced story throughout and keeping me hooked。Thanks for reading! The murderer reflects on the event without remorse: it was essential。 Man or woman, the person remains unknown。 However, Alison’s partner is convicted of her murder despite no body being found。 He has been in goal for almost nine years。 The introduction of a researcher for a true crime series which is to include the disappearance of Alison provides the pivot for looking into the past, and the relationships between Stephanie, Alison, and their university friends。 Oliver, at the time of the disappearance was Stephanie’s tutor。 Now they are married, and their friends are a wealthy married couple whose lifestyle contrasts with Stephanie’s past。 Nevertheless, it is a comfortable difference。 The cracks that appear in Stephanie’s new lifestyle are only augmented by the intrusion of the researcher。 As the title advises, she is aware of the limitations imposed by her choices, at the same time acknowledging their comfort and necessity。 Stephanie’s awareness of all the factors that make up her lifestyle is drawn sensitively。 Rijks is compassionate in her depiction of a woman in these circumstances。 What She Knew is a book worth reading。 Plot, characterisation, and resolution are satisfying, with an added touch of something more。 。。。more
